Casein is perfect for consumption at night (it's often referred to as 'night time protein'), as it's digested over a gradual period of eight hours or more, providing a sustained release of amino acids. This helps to ensure that muscles receive adequate nutritional support during the resting phase of sleep, which is integral to recovery.

Due to the often ‘heavier’ texture of casein, it can be more suited to mixing up into a type of dessert and eaten with a spoon, rather than drank as a shake. This can add variety to your eating plan, too, which can factor into keeping you motivated. Here’s a really simple recipe idea that’s perfect as a pre-bedtime treat; you can enjoy it –  guilt-free –  assured that you’re taking steps towards gaining muscle! The recipe uses Reflex Micellar Casein, currently on offer (10% off the 1.8kg size), in Strawberries & Cream flavour. 

Here's One We Made Earlier! 

  • Add a serving of Reflex Micellar Casein in Strawberries & Cream (three scoops, or 45g) to approximately 200ml of milk (preferably semi-skimmed or whole), and whisk until smooth. It helps if you add the powder gradually.
  • Add about 50-75g of Greek yogurt, folding this into the mix. Set in the fridge for a couple of hours until thick, almost mousse-like consistency is formed.
  • Slice strawberries and add to the casein mix, et voila! Grab a spoon and enjoy!
